Today in History - September 10, 1974

The Cardinals' Lou Brock ties (Maury Willis, 104 in 1962) and then sets (105) the Major League Baseball stolen base record for a single season. Brock went on to swipe a career high 118 bases in '74.
Brock's single season record would stand until 1982, when Rickey Henderson and his green gloves pilfered 130 bases. Henderson (1406) also destroyed Brock's career total (938) on his way to a
Hall of Fame induction in '09. Henderson's total is more than 50% higher than Brock's, which is pretty freaking amazing. Then again, so is the fact that Rickey was like 62 and still
playing baseball for the Newark Bears.
Impress your co-workers: Lou Brock (12) and Rickey Henderson (13) are the only two players in Major League history with at least twelve seasons of fifty or more stolen bases. Today's highest-frequency swiper, Jose Reyes, has accumulated four seasons.
