October 26th, 1982

steve-carltonOn this day 27 years ago, Steve Carlton became baseball's first pitcher to take home 4 Cy Young Awards - which made it increasingly difficult for opposing players to mock his well-groomed man perm.

Carlton's fourth Cy Young Award with the Phillies shot him past Jim Palmer, Tom Seaver and fellow lefty, Sandy Koufax, who all stood atop the Cy Young leader board with 3.

Carlton has since been tied by Greg Maddux (1992, 1993, 1994, 1995) and trumped by Randy Johnson (5: 1995, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002) and Roger Clemens (7: 1986, 1987, 1991, 1997, 1998, 2001, 2004).

Impress your co-workers: if you're one of the lucky souls to remember the time when Cy Young Awards were actually handed out in October (because, you know, baseball was already finished), pat yourself on the back.  Last year's Cy Young Awards weren't handed out until November 13th.  Sheesh.  Get it fixed, baseball.

In 1972, I had three complete games where I was the losing pitcher. How often does that happen now-a-days?

Check out Carlton's first Cy Young season (1972): 41 games started, 30 complete games, 8 shutouts, 27 wins 10 losses, 300 innings, 300 K's, 1.97 ERA. All that for a last-place team that only won 59 games. Amazing.

He looks like Bruce Jenner wearing a clown wig.

Carlton's dome stays well ventilated, due to the fact that his hat is completely supported (and secured) by his man-perm.

How has that card not made it into the glorious Worthless Baseball Card Collection on JSF? Tremendous perm.

Ramon Romero

Whenever the Cleveland Indians pitching staff needed a win in the worst way, they encouraged Ramon Romero to pull out the glove he knew as "mi pupura martillo". Translation: My Purple Hammer
