Mark McGwire Makes “Most Disliked People In Sports” List
2010
Over the weekend, Forbes.com released a list of the “The Most Disliked People In Sports”. It’s quite a distinguished collection of rabble-rousers.
Michael Vick, Al Davis, Ben Roethlisberger, Tiger Woods, Jerry Jones, Terrell Owens, Alex Rodriguez, Allen Iverson, Gilbert Arenas.
And…wait for it…
Mark McGwire.
Forbes.com includes the following explanation about McGwire’s inclusion on the list.
Baseball’s steroid stigma still needs some time to pass, apparently. McGwire’s recent tearful interview with Bob Costas got mixed reviews – he came across as genuinely sorry but refused to acknowledge the ‘roids pumped up his home run total. Luckily hitting coaches spend little time on the field during the game.
According to the report, Forbes surveyed people 13 and older and the group of respondents included active sports figures. McGwire was smacked with a 48% dislike rating – which was more than Alex Rodriguez (45% dislike), but less than Michael Vick (63%). I’m no McGwire apologist, but he’s only 15% less disliked than a guy that admittedly killed and tortured dogs? Wow.
Nevertheless, 50% seems about right for McGwire. Given the call-ins on local sports talk radio, that seems accurate. One idiot loves him….followed by another idiot that hates him.
Repeat as needed.
