Scott Rolen Inspires a Catchy Lil’ Tune
Scott Rolen has performed well against the Cardinals in 2010. If you listen to sports talk radio or skim through local message boards, you know that. Most of those people have Rolen coming back to St. Louis in a three-way trade with the Yankees that would also deliver Alex Rodriguez. Sure, they both play third base, but Tony knows how to manage his bench, dammit!!!
Nevertheless, let’s focus on the numbers. In 12 games against the Cardinals, Rolen has 4 HR and 10 RBI – which accounts roughly 33% of his season totals in those respective categories.
Many people, inside and outside Cincinnati, second-guessed the Reds’ trade for Rolen last July considering they were nowhere near contention for the NL Central and he was due $11 million in 2010. But the cunning Walt Jocketty (who rescued Rolen from Philadelphia and brought him to St. Louis in 2003) restructured Rolen’s salary for 2011 and extended his contract through 2012, at $6.5 million per season. Not too shabby.
In addition to his performance on the field, Rolen has provided the Reds with integral leadership. The Cincinnati faithful, including one musician, have taken note.
