Last weekend, veteran National League umpire Kerwin Danley was struck in the jawby a 96 MPH Brad Penny fastball. Danley has yet to return to the field and still has headaches, but all signs point to a full recovery. Nothing funny about taking a near-100 MPH fastball to the face.
Unless of course Vin Scully is calling the action and narrates the life and times of Kerwin while he's unconscious. See for yourself.
"Oh my gosh. The first pitch hits the umpire and Kerwin Danley, who is the crew chief, is on his back. Kerwin has been umpiring in the Major Leagues for 11 years. Lives in Arizona... ... It got him, I believe, on the neck under the mask and just about knocked him out. Wow. Kerwin Danley went to school at San Diego State and among other things when while he was down there, Kerwin was a teammate of Tony Gwynn. So Kerwin Danley is nailed... he just took a fastball on the side of the neck."
