Barry Melrose and Don Cherry were both born somewhere in Canada and would undoubtedly sleep with Patrick Roy...but their similarities fall apart from there.  Although they share an affinity for the game they love, Melrose and Cherry have their differences.

Most notably, Melrose differs from Cherry - and most men in 2008, for that matter - because he sports one of the finest mullets in the land.

Ever since the infamous "Mel Kiper - Todd McShay Hair Trade" was posted by The Sports Hernia (one of our favorites) after the NFL Draft, fantasy follicle exchanges pop in and out of our heads daily.

Cheers to the guys over at Sports Hernia.  They make life more enjoyable.

While we wait for our dream trade between Linda Cohn and Peter Gammons, we finalized the Melrose-Cherry interchange, and were amazed at their post-swap underlying alter egos.

Don Cherry looks like a living playing card in that picture.
kegler804, May 21, 2008 02:05 AM
It would appear that I have tapped into a previously un-heard from vein of hockey fans. Could this be the begining of a movement?? Thank god for Don Cherry and Barry Melrose! (I haven't felt this proud since I invented the internet!!) Sebek.........Is that special place near and dear to your heart, or at the small table in back next to the kitchen entrance and the restrooms?

That mullet certainly fits Don Cherry perfect. He should consider growing one it fits is attire perfectly. And jesus what the fuck happened to Mike Tyson? that fight with Kimbo Slice doesn't look so attractive now.
Pastor of Muppets, May 20, 2008 09:05 AM
Cherry there kinda looks like Triple H. He's-ah the Game-ah!!!
Benjamin Franklin, May 20, 2008 09:05 AM
I just realized how much Barry Melrose looks like the guy that played me in the John Adams miniseries (he's also the same guy that played Lord Cornwallis in "The Patriot" ... and Jun-Tao in "Rush Hour").

Beautiful comments Kegler... Hockey might be irrelevent to all of you, but to Canadians like me hockey is King... Saturday Hockey Night in Canada is like your MNF, but bigger (for us). It's that tradition that's been around since I was young of family and friends gathering around the TV for a hockey game, and Coach's Corner with Don Cherry in flamboyant suits... it's traditionKegler...Could spell colour please?- Paul Kariya, Manny Legacy, Eric Brewer, Keith Tkacheuk... Only St Louis players I can think of off the top of my heard
How do you spell retard?, May 20, 2008 08:05 AM
Go ahead and call me a hockey n00b who hasn't seen 'Hockey Night in Canada', but is anyone else unimpressed with Don Cherry on ESPN. Yes he's got a goofy look, but his little satellite appearances are quite boring. At least they get Melrose in studio and don't have an seris of questions and a lack of continuity. How many times do I have to hear the Flyers aren't playing Philly hockey in a single segment. Don Cherry on ESPN < Barry Melrose on ESPN.

What an emotional turn -- Kegler, I too salute you.
Sebek, May 20, 2008 07:05 AM
You have a special place in my life, kegler.
kegler804, May 20, 2008 07:05 AM
Badsin, by way of friendly discussion here, let me offer you and your Flyers congratulations on a hell of a season. That team made a tremandous turnaround from last season, and I know that your town was really getting excited. Plus, your GM, Paul Holmgren, did a hell of a job as well. That being said, I guess my biggest "problem" is calling the sport "irrelevant", because it is not. To YOU, yes, it very well may be, and that is fine. To each their own. But it is not irrelevant to everyone (Pee Wee leagues, Highschools, colleges, beer leagues, etc, etc.) Additionally, I do think this site that "celebrates the absurdity of professional sports", and is based out of St. Louis, should include in it's coverage the St. Louis Blues, because they are a member of one of the recogzied, and agreed upon, Major Professional Sports. Otherwise, they should change their mission statement to "celebratings the absurdity of professional baseball, basketball, football, and ESPN". Not saying I need a weekly NHL feature, just throw me a bone every now and then. Obviously, I must be a bigger (that does not mean BETTER) hockey/NHL fan than you, (I know your GM's name, Your goalie is Marty Biron, and I think you have a guy named Mike Richards who you signed to an unbelievably large contract. Again to each their own. I mean no disrespect Badsin, look forward to corresponding again.Sebek.....I am done for the day. Thank You for your time and attention.
Sebek, May 20, 2008 05:05 AM
Badsin and kegler, do you guys need me to create a private forum where you guys can chat in private?
Badsin, May 20, 2008 05:05 AM
kegler804, I agree with your point that every major sport has gone through periods where they've been neglected by the national media but in an age where you can get up to the second scores on every sporting event the average sports fan these days couldn't name you a player in the NHL outside of Sidney Crosby or Alexander Ovechkin. I would consider myself a hockey fan in the same sense you are (I'm a Flyers fan) and to be honest with you I can't name a single player on the Blues and would probably struggle coming up with 3 players names on the Red Wings this year's favorite to win the cup.
kegler804, May 20, 2008 05:05 AM
rally = really
kegler804, May 20, 2008 05:05 AM
I don't know that I'd agree with you that hockey is not relevant. I mean rally, wasn't there a time when EVERY major sport was irrelevant, even the NFL???? And I am not toooo young to remeber when the NBA was struggeling to gain it's fair share of the market. And as a prime example of this, just look at how far professional curling has come in recent years!! But seriously, hilarious article here, and I, as a hockey fan (or at least a St. Louis Blues fan) appreciate the inclusion of some of hockey's more colorful (read: frightenengly moronic) characters, for they truely are one of the more absurd things in professional sports.
Sebek, May 20, 2008 04:05 AM
Badsin, hockey might not be relevant....but the mulleted men that cover it most certainly are.
Jeremy, May 20, 2008 04:05 AM
So when will Don Cherry's game show be on the air?
The Sports Hernia, May 20, 2008 04:05 AM
Awesome guys, really funny stuff. Melrose suddenly looks like he's easily the most powerful man on the planet (not that he wasn't already) and Cherry now looks like someone that would do anything to keep me solving the mystery to his treasure map.
Badsin, May 20, 2008 03:05 AM
Hockey must be relevant again if JSF continues to fire out NHL articles
Kevin, May 20, 2008 03:05 AM
Awesome.
kegler804, May 20, 2008 03:05 AM
Actually, I kinda like Don Cherry with a mullet. It brings some sense to the suits anyway.
kegler804, May 20, 2008 02:05 AM
YES, YES, YES!!! I love it!!! Priceless stuff, guys! The Cowardly Lion is genius! Great piece here! Thank you!
Ryan B, May 20, 2008 02:05 AM
I was sad to see no Fan of the Week this Tuesday - but this made up for it.
Jason, May 19, 2008 05:05 PM
That picture of the cowardly lion is absolutely amazing - probably because Don Cherry makes that face every time he's on TV.
Gregory D., May 19, 2008 03:05 PM
