With two huge deals in the National League Central this past week, the trade deadline has gotten some much earlier hype than it usually does.  Both the Sabathia and the Harden trades have a possibility to become horrible for any of the teams involved—the Brewers miss the playoffs, Sabathia walks after the season, and Matt LaPorta dominates for years; Harden snaps his arm in half this Sunday.  But the thing about most every trade that is made is that you really don’t know how good or bad that they will turn out for, in many cases, years afterwards.  Since the decade is already winding down, it is now possible to look back at the worst trades that have been made since 2000 in baseball.

7. Paul DePodesta’s debacle, 2004
HeeSeop.jpgAs a new GM and wanting to mix it up even though his team was in first, DePodesta traded Paul LoDuca, Guillermo Mota, and Juan Encarnacion to the Marlins for Hee Seop Choi and Brad Penny.  The Dodgers ended up making the playoffs anyways, but this trade makes it just for its gratuitous nature and the fact that it severely pissed off the fans that loved LoDuca.

6. Cardinals/Angels, 2000
This has been covered before just because it’s underrated how lucky this season was, but Kent Bottenfield won 18 games for the Cards in 1999…and no one can still explain how.  The next spring, the Cards took advantage of that and an itchy Angel team to turn Bottenfield and Adam Kennedy into Jim Edmonds, who they promptly signed to a long-term deal and watched him become the greatest center fielder in club history.

5. Cubs/Pirates, 2003
HernandezJose.jpgNeeding some extra pop for their 2003 run, the Cubs got it for many more years, getting Aramis Ramirez from the Pirates, who inexplicably still had two years left on his contract after the season.  The Cubs also gained Kenny Lofton who helped immensely in their stretch run.  They gave up Jose Hernandez, who left the Pirates after the year, Matt Bruback, who never has played in the majors, and a guy named Bobby, who was a part-timer for two years and hasn’t played since.

4. Cardinals/A’s, late 2004
In what could end up being a learning experience for the Cubs (Billy Beane calls offering a pitcher!?  Don’t answer the phone!), the Cardinals, needing another top starter, trade future top starter Danny Haren, good setup guy Kiko Calero, and prospect Daric Barton to the A’s for Mark Mulder.  To call it a disappointing trade for the Cards is quite the understatement.  He played no part in the World Series that they won and may have thrown his last pitch this past Wednesday.  Haren was one of the best starters in the majors just two years later, and Barton has hit the majors (though hasn’t been very effective yet).

3. Mets/Devil Rays, 2004
Take your pick—Victor Zambrano or Scott Kazmir.  This is similar to the Cards/A’s deal, except Cards fans at least got a World Series since then and don’t have to watch Kazmir consistently throw some of the nastiest pitches of the decade while playing for Tampa Bay.

2. Cubs/Marlins, late 2003
DLee.jpgHee Seop Choi hit .218 with 8 homers for the Cubs in 2003.  The Marlins felt that was enough for them to accept him for rising star Derrek Lee, who had just played a huge part in upsetting the Cubs in the NLCS and winning the World Series.  The next season, Choi made it just over half the season in Miami before being traded again, and Lee was enjoying another solid season that led into one of the best seasons anyone has had this decade.

1. Giants/Twins
Giants receive: A.J. Pierzynski
Twins receive: Boof Bonser, Francisco Liriano, and Joe Nathan

Brian Sabean must have been on crack.

The Top 7 List is written by Jason Major.  He's pretty sure  Boof Bonser has the best name in baseball.  Email him at jason@joesportsfan.com

No Urbina to Philly for Polanco?
Badsin, July 14, 2008 08:07 AM
How is there not a single Ed Wade transaction on this list? Curt Schilling for Omar Daal, Travis Lee and Vicente Padilla; Placido Polanco for Ugueth Urbina (currently serving time in a Venezuelan prison) and Ramon Martinez; Brad Lidge for Michael Bourn, Geoff Geary and Mike Costanzo
Lloyd Christmas, July 14, 2008 06:07 AM
Harry....you're alive! and you're an awful shot!!!
AC, July 14, 2008 05:07 AM
Brandon Phillips for a can of dip and a bucket of balls?!?!?
Royals fan, July 14, 2008 05:07 AM
As a Royals fan, can you please include Jermaine Dye for Neifi Perez. Straight up. And this was on the heels of trading Johnny Damon for a 58-year old Roberto Hernandez and Angel Berroa. Or, as Harry said in Dumb and Dumber: "Just when I think you can't get any dumber, you go and do something like this ... and TOTALLY redeem yourself!"
alex, July 14, 2008 02:07 AM
Mike Maroth for Chris Lambert?!?!
dan, July 13, 2008 05:07 PM
Lifelong Bums fan and I was happy then about the LA trade and Im happier now. Dealing the dealer was great. Dodgers have some talent at backstop. No worries.

Which one do you want: Young/Gonzalez for Eaton/Otsuka? Soriano for Wilkerson/Sledge/Gallaraga? Or how about my favorite: Hafner/Myette for Diaz/Drese?Posted By caknuck @ 12:55:10 AM - July 12, 2008 None of them. Hamilton/Volquez. Now it's obviously too soon to tell how good this will all shake out. Seems like an even trade, right? Wrong. Reds didn't even ask about Volquez. They wanted a couple mid-level prospects that will never see the bigs. The Rangers on their own offered up Volquez. I'd throw in the Gagne trade for this reason, the most immediate impact guy has been David Murphy. Someone the Rangers never even asked about or wanted or maybe even knew about. The Sox for some strange reason just threw him in the mix.
franc, July 12, 2008 07:07 AM
Why is trade #7 on here. Brad Penny is a great pitcher and he best player by far in this trade.Dumb.
Justin, July 12, 2008 05:07 AM
Josh fails at baseball. Seriously were you in a drunken coma in 2005? Also, anybody that thinks #1 should not be 1 needs to watch the Twins more. Bonser became a decent 3rd starter, Liriano is a freaking stud waiting to happen, and Nathan is a lights out closer. And oh yeah, AJ walked after only 1 year in San Fran.
caknuck, July 11, 2008 08:07 PM
RC635:Total fail without at least one Rangers trade.Which one do you want: Young/Gonzalez for Eaton/Otsuka? Soriano for Wilkerson/Sledge/Gallaraga? Or how about my favorite: Hafner/Myette for Diaz/Drese?
Irotsoma, July 11, 2008 03:07 PM
The Angels trade got rid of a clubhouse cancer and even though Bottenfield was a bust Adam Kennedy ended being a major reason part of the team that won the world series in 2002. So that trade not even worth mentioning in the bad trade list
RC635, July 11, 2008 03:07 PM
Total fail without at least one Rangers trade.
Bill, July 11, 2008 12:07 PM
To the commentor talking about the Lee/Podsednik deal, what a joke! Trading Carlos Lee freed up alot of money, along with letting Jose Valentin and Magglio Ordonez walk, which the Sox turned into Podsednik, Jermaine Dye, Luis Vizcaino, Tadahito Iguchi, AJ Pierzynski, Orlando Hernandez, and Dustin Hermanson. Pods sucked after the World Series run but was critical for the run. Vizacaino is still finding success and it was a bad move to trade him after the season. That trade wound up being critical for the Sox to win a World Series as it filled a HUGE need for a leadoff hitter and increased the bullpen depth. And I don't care if the Sox pulled off a deal so bad that day of the trade and years later could be considered the worst trade in MLB history, if they win the World Series in that same season it was all worth it
Bill, July 11, 2008 12:07 PM
You can't look back years later to see how a trade ended up. The day of the deal is what matters most. The AJ deal belongs in the top 7 but not #1. The one that is #1 is the Cubs/Pirates. The Choi-Lee deal wasn't #2 worst day of the trade because at least Choi was a frontline prospect. The Harden deal the Cubs just pulled off definetly belongs on this list as the Cubs gave up NOTHING to get him and good insurance! None of those guys the A's obtained have any trade value (maybe Patterson a bit but thats it), and I have lost a great deal of respect for Billy Beane after that move.
Jason, July 11, 2008 10:07 AM
Bartolo Colon to the Expos for Grady Sizemore, Cliff Lee and Brandon Phillips. How is this not #1?
Josh, July 11, 2008 09:07 AM
If you go back an actual decade the Fernando Vina deal to the Cards in 99 sucked hard too
Josh, July 11, 2008 09:07 AM
The Scott Posednik, Luis Vizcaino, Travis Hinton for Carlos Lee trade was a pretty bad one for the White Sox as Posednik hasn't done crap since then and the other two sucked as well.
Mark D, July 11, 2008 09:07 AM
What about the collection of corpses that the Phillies received from Arizona in return for Curt Schilling? The D'Backs got a #2 starter who was arguably better than almost any other team's 1 starter. The Phillies got Vicente Padilla, Omar Daal and Travis "Why Should I Listen to my Coaches?" Lee. Lee had the potential to achive Von Hayes status among fans in Philly, but he was gone after 2 seasons.
masv, July 11, 2008 09:07 AM
Adrian Gonzalez, Chris Young and Termell Sledge for Adam Eaton and Akinori Otsuka should be there.
Yusef, July 11, 2008 08:07 AM
I don't agree with number seven. He had Russel Martin waiting in the wings behind Paul Lo Duca, and I think everyone can agree Martin is a lot better player than Lo Duca.
Boomer, July 11, 2008 08:07 AM
Joe, Littlefield is actually still in baseball. Scout with the Cubs. At least he's actually getting a paycheck from them now instead of handing them Pittsburgh's best players. I still believe he knew he was getting fired and it was a big middle finger to the Pirate organization.
JB, July 11, 2008 08:07 AM
The two big omissions were the Colon deal and the Chris Young/Adrian Gonzalez deal. Both of those were ridiculous just in the amount of young talent that was shipped out.
MC, July 11, 2008 08:07 AM
Orioles give John Maine and Jorge Julio for Chris Benson's wifes large breasts.

Mickey Tettleton
luissojo, July 11, 2008 08:07 AM
The Varitek and DeShields deals were in the 90s.
Mike, July 11, 2008 07:07 AM
The Depodesta trade clearly does not belong on this list. You must believe the propaganda that is the LA Media on this trade. People tend to forget that the Dodgers did WIN the NL West that year. Their clear weakness was a frontline starting pitcher and although Penny got hurt, DP was correct in addressing the need. Also, he added Finley who played a big role down the stretch. In retrospect Paul LaDuca turned out to be an uproductive player and a dirtbag. If LoDuca was still lingering in Los Angeles Martin may have been traded or never broguht up.Most value since the trade was clearly Brad Penny, a win-win deal for the Dodgers
Dwan, July 11, 2008 07:07 AM
What about Seattle giving the Red Sox Varitek and Derek Lowe for Heath Slocumb. If that isn't a steal, I don't know what is.
Mike Schmidt, July 11, 2008 07:07 AM
The Phillies might have gotten a pile of poo poo for Abreu but that's exactly what they gave up to get him back in '97...and they probably saved $20MM in the process.
Sam, July 11, 2008 06:07 AM
I agree with Adam...The Indians sending Colon to the Expos for Sizemore, Lee, Phillips probably should be up on the list. Especially since the expos missed the post season and flipped Colon for Rocky Biddle, Orlando Hernandez and Jeff Liefer.
Dodgersblues, July 11, 2008 06:07 AM
How can you say the LoDuca trade was a bad trade after the Mitchell report? They knew Paul was juicing and supplying juice to other players like Gagne. He always faded after the break and he went on to become hated in NY. Mota has been suspended for juice since then as well. On the other hand, Penny has been an all-star. Can't knock DePodesta for this one.....
luissojo, July 11, 2008 05:07 AM
How about the Yanks receiving Bobby Abreu for a package of wet napkins? The Mets dealt Melvin Mora to the O's for a washed up Mike Bordick too.
Nolan , July 11, 2008 05:07 AM
The angels trade was made because Jim Edmonds was a cancer in the clubhouse, and was a prima donna. They knew what they were trading away.
Joe, July 11, 2008 05:07 AM
Even though the Pirates did not give up any talent to get him their trade for Matt Morris and his 10M plus salary last year has to be one of the worst. The Giants were begging other teams to take on even a quarter of his contract but David Littlefield said thats alright, we'll take it all. No wonder he is now unemployed!
nick, July 11, 2008 05:07 AM
How come the Astros/rockies trade was did not make list. Houston gave up Hirsch, Taveras, Bucholz for Jennings? That seems like a joke to me. Houston did not even get jennings for the whole season and then released him. Houston gave up their top prospects for a mediocre starter
Patrick, July 11, 2008 05:07 AM
Ryan, while I agree that the Dodgers/Marlins trade wasn't that bad, the title of this list is 'worst trades of the decade'. That doesn't mean the 1990s, when Pedro/DeLino was made.

Ed, July 11, 2008 05:07 AM
If you read the Mitchell report, you'll find the reasoning for the LoDuca trade and you'll probably agree to it.LoDuca had been using steroids most of his career and the Dodgers knew it. He stopped using the steroids and started to decline. The Dodgers wanted to sell high while he still had value. As to LoDuca's improved play after the trade - he ordered more steroids the day after being traded, which the Dodgers also expected to happen.
Alonzo Moseley, July 11, 2008 05:07 AM
Brian Sabean made that trade because he thought someone old him Pierzynski was 52 years old. He thought that would be the perfect fit for his senior citizen movement. He was very disappointed and realized he had made a mistake when he found out A.J.'s age was actually 25.
Darin, July 11, 2008 05:07 AM
Adam Wainwright, Jason Marquis and Ray King for Eli Marrero and JD Drew?
Cub Fan, July 11, 2008 05:07 AM
You may want to know one of the most lopsided trades in baseball history.Ryne Sandberg was a throw in.
Dan Duquette, July 11, 2008 05:07 AM
Thanks for your support, Steve. The trade just made too much sense for me.

freddy 'fat elvis' garcia for gavin floyd and gio gonzalez. freddy garcia had exactly one win for the phillies in 2007. gavin floyd is a stud pitcher this year.
Travis, July 11, 2008 05:07 AM
In an ironic move you have left off one of the most lopsided trades in the recent decade...yet you have a picture of the player in the article. Rangers deal high level prospects Chris Young and Adrian Gonzalez for SP Adam Eaton and RP Akinori Otsuka. Eaton was hurt and didnt play for the first half of the season and then left for Philly (where he still sucked). Otsuka was decent but has since blown out his arm. On the other side Chris Young, pictured above, is a CY Young quality pitcher for SD, which the Rangers desperately need, and Adrian Gonzalez is again an all-star. True Gonzalez was blocked by Teixeria, but with him gone and a gapping whole at 1B this trade looks even more lopsided.
Ryan Somers, July 11, 2008 05:07 AM
You seem to be forgetting the years Brad Penny has had since, and how are Loduca, Encarnacion and Mota doing now? As a BIG DODGERS FAN, I am stunned that you picked this trade and overlooked Delino Deshields for PEDRO, then again you might only be 10 years old because all your picks happened in the last 8 years.
Boomer, July 11, 2008 05:07 AM
Lots of Pirate trades could go in here. The Ramirez trade was a salary dump because of how pitiful ownership probably wasn't going to make payroll the next month. How about this doozy from just before spring training a few years back. Pirates aquire Matt Herges from Padres, then cut him at the end of that same spring. San Diego acquires Chris Young, who could be one of the game's top young hurlers. Or how about last August when Pirates take on Matt Morris and his entire $10 million a year contract. Sure, Pittsburgh only gave up Rajah Davis and a Single A reliever, but they took the whole contract when San Fran was willing to pay 50-66 percent of it just to get rid of him. Morris gets crushed in less then 10 starts between last year and this year and gets released, but is still making up 20 percent of the Pirates salary this year. Dave Littlefield is an evil individual.
sean, July 11, 2008 05:07 AM
Dan Meyer, Charles Thomas, and Juan Cruz for Tim Hudson
Adam, July 11, 2008 04:07 AM
What about the Bartolo Colon deal? Bartolo Colon for Grady Sizemore, Cliff Lee and Brandon Phillips? In hindsight that is one of the worst deals I have ever seen.
Josue, July 11, 2008 04:07 AM
Dodgers got Brad Penny AND made the playoffs, while getting rid of popular but 'roided up Lo Duca and Mota. Remind me how this was the 7th worst trade of the decade? Sure Choi, didn't work out, and Penny got hurt and was out for a year. But 7th worse trade of the decade? Not even close.
bk, July 11, 2008 04:07 AM
You forgot that Sabean also got some magic beans.
Brian Sabean, July 11, 2008 04:07 AM
In my defense, we didn't need those guys. We had Barry Bonds, and we knew Barry Zito would be a free agent in 2007. And why do we have to have a closer if we aren't ahead in the ninth?
Steve Phillips, July 11, 2008 03:07 AM
I could totally make a deal like Kazmir/Zambrano.
