Often times, there are discussions about who the most exciting player is in their particular sport.  In basketball, it was Michael Jordan, and now it’s LeBron or Kobe or Kevin Garnett.  In baseball, it has to be Pujols.  Michael Vick used to be the guy in football before something happened to him.  But what about the single most exciting general plays in sports?

I am sure I am missing something, but here you go.
7. World Cup blocked penalty kicks

These are amazing not only because should they seemingly never happen (200 mph kick from ten feet away blocked?), but you can just picture one entire country screaming with joy, and another ready to gauge their eyes out with a small knife, which is only a slight exaggeration.

6. NCAA Tournament buzzer beaters

If this were only “buzzer beaters that allow a high seed to beat a low seed or ones that allowed your pool team to survive,” it would be much higher.  Seeing a 10-seed battle a 2 all the way to the end, only to have the 2 win at the buzzer, is almost a bit of a letdown.  But ones like Bryce Drew’s in 1998 can still give one chills almost ten years later.

5. Jumping off the top rope

This used to be a much bigger deal.  When Superfly Snuka or Macho Man headed to the top rope, the entire arena got to its feet and screamed.  Thanks to the WWF/ECW/WCW of the late 90s and early 00s, crowds now clamor for guys to go past the top rope to the top of a cage, do a triple somersault, and land on a chair.

4. Returning a kick for a touchdown

People who saw the Bears game last week got a taste of it twice, as Devin Hester juked, ran, and jumped over people as he scored two more run-backs.  This play probably gets more “Oh my God—that’s unbelievable!” reactions than anything else.

3. Balks

There is no other single play in sports where the official/referee/umpire screams the call at their top of their lungs, while most people look around wondering what in the world happened.  Also, probably less than 50% of fans understand what a balk is, making it even more exciting when it actually happens.  Learn to appreciate the balk.

2. Destroying a home run

Probably the most memorable home run of this generation that was simply annihilated was Jose Canseco’s 1989 blast at SkyDome in Toronto during the ALCS, where he hit it in the very top of what seemed like 17 decks.  Albert Pujols’s shot in the 2005 NLCS was quite a bomb too.  What’s strange about home runs that travel insane distances is that sometimes the farthest ones do not even seem like they are hit with effort.  Mark McGwire consistently hit further homers than anyone, but they looked nothing like the ones that someone like Eric Davis hit.

1. Dunking on someone

Michael Jordan spinning three Knicks out of the way and dunking on Patrick Ewing.  Scottie Pippen dunking on Patrick Ewing and throwing him to the floor.  Actually, there are several other examples of guys dunking on Ewing.  Or Shawn Bradley.  There isn’t quite anything else that can get fans hyped more than seeing someone dunk right on top of someone else, especially when they look like they are pissed off as they do it.  Charles Barkley was the king of this.  You may have been too on your 8 foot 6 inch rim in your front yard, which is probably why this one is at the top.  A lot of us can relate, albeit on a much smaller scale.

The Brett Favre NFL Replica Jersey was purchased for our 9 yr old grandson, who is a Green Bay Packer Fan because of his grandfather. I never saw a kid so excited with receiving a shirt.

Personally, to be more exact on the dunks, I love watching big black guys totally posterize small white guys in short-shorts
Chris Berman, December 3, 2007 05:12 AM
Love the loose ball in football. Anywhere from 5-15 enormous men scrambling around trying to grab one little ball. It's a FUMBLE!!!
Kilo, December 3, 2007 02:12 AM
Can we just agree that Ortiz and Pujols are arguably 2 of the 5 most valuable players in MLB today?

Ortiz=Pujols

What about everything I do?
JB, December 2, 2007 04:12 PM
Two ways to get into a fight with the proprietors of this website are to claim that a.) Albert Pujols is overrated and b.) that David Ortiz (who is a DH by the way) is better than Pujols.

Auto Phil, December 2, 2007 03:12 PM
Nice list, but the first video shows a penalty kick MISS (off the crossbar) rather than a PK BLOCK.

not one of those penalty kicks was blocked...the US women's soccer team goalie stopped the chinese (whether legally or not) she stopped the shot...hitting the post...not as exciting...stopping a soccer penalty kick exciting
Patrick, November 30, 2007 10:11 AM
That would have been really cool to witness live. So would A. Pujols' shot off Lidge in '05, Game 5.
CJB, November 30, 2007 10:11 AM
I was at the Skydome 3rd base side upper deck when Jose hit that blast in the ALCS. I had a perfect sightline when it took off. I still can't believe how far it traveled.
The game as slipping away by that time but you could just feel the team and Toronto fans lose whatever hope we had left of a comeback. That shot pretty much finished the game and the series.
Trout, November 30, 2007 10:11 AM
I enjoyed the Jordan clips. Good thing the NBA refs didn't call traveling back in those days.

Hitting a Triple and then stealing home on the next pitch...Sick...I guess thats two plays though

Wow, these comments are awesome.

a. That McGwire homer is my favorite McGwire homer ever.
b. Baseball Simulator! I get made fun of for liking that game!
c. Balks were a joke.
d. Penalty kicks is a definite omission.
e. I like chicken.

Motorcycle stunt are exciting. In memory of Evel Knievel R.I.P.
Patrick, November 30, 2007 06:11 AM
Anon... we couldn't find any video of a blocked pk (unless we wanted to spend 77 hours searching), so that Cup video was the next best thing.

Also, watching the Jordan dunk video is still amazing. The one where he strips the ball and rips through what seems like 19 Heat defenders is just funny.
WII console, November 30, 2007 06:11 AM
Baseball Simulator 1000 on NES. Anytime you had the bases loaded the "pinch" box lit up telling you that your pitcher was in , well a pinch. This caused the pitcher to either be tired and threw 55 MPH fastballs or to fire his butt up full of energy and he'd throw that speed ball by you. The music also changed to "dire" sounding music. Sigh....the good ole days of video game.....I'm too advanced now.
Cole, November 30, 2007 06:11 AM
Wow - no love for hockey at all on this site. Penalty shots are always exciting, and for the 3 people who actually get Vs., they know that the tie-break shootout system is hella exciting, too.

also, where is the entry for mascot fights?
woody, November 30, 2007 06:11 AM
Stealing home is awesome and a rare occurance. Or bases loaded full count runners moving on the pitch. potentially very exciting. Especially if a balk is involved at the same time.
Anon, November 30, 2007 06:11 AM
You list 'Wold Cup blocked penalty kicks', but then the accompanying video doesn't even include a blocked kick!! WTF is up with that?

Sean Casey getting thrown out at first by the left fielder is the greatest play in any sport ever.

Gotta love the intentional walk.
Patrick, November 30, 2007 04:11 AM
What a slut.
Ernest, November 30, 2007 04:11 AM
I'd put in an honorable mention vote for the flea flicker, too. As soon as that running back turns around to pitch the ball back to the quarterback, you start thinking big play. And when the QB does throw it deep, you're just waiting for the score and the crowd to erupt. Great buildup, great payoff when it happens.
Now, when the defense doesn't bite and the pass turns into something like a 15-yard out? That just sucks. Like a girl flirting with you all night and then saying she has to be home by 11.
Kilo, November 30, 2007 04:11 AM
White guys like Tom Chambers jumping over 7 foot tall people to dunk are very cool.
S, November 30, 2007 04:11 AM
The right fielder throwing out a baserunner at third
Darrell Dawkins, November 30, 2007 04:11 AM
Dunks are great, but they're best when you whack somebody in the face with you're package while in mid-air. I perfected that move.
ScottVanPeltStyle.com, November 30, 2007 04:11 AM
Kobe did all of this, last night.
Brian H., November 30, 2007 03:11 AM
I would replace the balk with the suicide squeze play. It's jolting if you didn't see it coming. If you do expect it, the anticipation is equally exciting.
Dennis Rodman, November 30, 2007 03:11 AM
Madonna? Where?
Vanilla Ice, November 30, 2007 03:11 AM
Jose is correct.
Jose Canseco, November 30, 2007 03:11 AM
Know what else is exciting, Kilo? Banging Madonna. Yeah, I'm the man. Me and the 10000 other guys that have too. We're all the man.
Sparty, November 30, 2007 03:11 AM
Game winning goal in Bubble Hockey is pretty cool also.
Sandy Alomar, Jr., November 30, 2007 02:11 AM
Hey Moose, LOOK OUT!...heh heh...that never gets old.
Kilo, November 30, 2007 02:11 AM
Speaking of Canseco, homeruns that bounce off of people's heads are pretty cool too.
TF, November 30, 2007 02:11 AM
An outfielder robbing someone of a HR is sometimes more exciting than the longball, but this is still an awesome list. It reminds me of two pretty exciting things I got to see in person at Orioles games. First, was when Aubrey Huff hit for the cycle this past year. Second, I was at the game in like 96 or 97 when Sandy Alomar drilled Mike Mussina in the face with a line drive. Everybody in the stands thought Moose was killed instantly. Fun stuff.
Kilo, November 30, 2007 02:11 AM
Great list. I would have to include inside the park homerun/play at the plate in this category very high up. I can think of few things as exciting as a laser throw from the outfield either getting the runner, or just missing.

Also, if you're ever at Fenway park before the seats are filled, walk out to the right field bleachers and find the one red seat. Then look back towards home plate. Ted Williams hit a home run to that spot. Amazing.
Ernest, November 30, 2007 02:11 AM
The Canseco homer was awesome. I still remember seeing that and wanting to see about 300 replays just to watch it again.

There was another monster homer a few years later that never got as much pub, though. It was a July game in the Kingdome between the Mariners and A's, and Randy Johnson was facing McGwire. It was like the perfect storm -- 100 mph pitch vs. 100 mph swing. I think the ball hit the back wall of the Kingdome. For some reason, though, this never gets replayed.
tusker, November 30, 2007 02:11 AM
dude...one-punch knock-outs.
nothing is better.

Go to Longest Home Run Ever Hit in The Baseball Almanac to get a more accurate distance on these homeruns.
That Guy, November 29, 2007 07:11 PM
I know this is farther back than we usually go on this here site, but #2 made me think of Babe Ruth:

"Probably his deepest hit in official game play (and perhaps the longest home run by any player), occurred on July 18, at Detroit's Navin Field, in which he hit one to straightaway center, over the wall of the then-single-deck bleachers, and to the intersection, some 575 feet from home plate."

If you want your brain to melt you should check out his baseball-reference.com and Wiki pages to get a real understanding as to why he's as revered as he is still to this day.

Jay Johnstone

Because of Jay Johnstone's antics one September day in Chicago, team officials quickly revoked the team's right to consume alcohol during long-winded rain delays.
