You're a fraud

According to Dennis Dodd at Sportsline.com, the Jayhawks bought their way into the Orange Bowl.
"Kansas got into the Orange Bowl ahead of Missouri because the school guaranteed tickets. Attendance is still an issue with the Orange, and KU AD Lew Perkins guaranteeing ticket sales probably put the Jayhawks over the top.   As unseemly as it sounds, Missouri could have bought its way into the BCS. The ticket thing is left over from the old bowl system. It's clear that Perkins knows how to play the game. Missouri thought everything would work out. Well, it didn't."

mangino_t450.jpgFull disclosure: Dennis Dodd graduated from the University of Missouri.  So too did this here guy typing.  That out of the way, I'm not outraged as a Mizzou fan, but do think it's noteworthy.

Reader Dubbs in Kansas City had some more info, summarized thusly:

"according to radio in kc the big12 has opened a formal investigation into it this afternoon...  all that will happen is they pay a fine, but I think their public image will be damaged terribly if it is in fact true, the espns will laugh even harder at the ku joke... soft schedule and buy way to big bowl, on top of the fact that they are on ncaa probation for academic fraud (no one mentions this fact)"

Mangino and the KU football program bought its way to the Orange Bowl.  I would have thought Mangino would buy his way into the Cheesesteak Bowl before anything else  (BA DA DA CH!).

Previously

The BCS: where winning kind of matters

UPDATE: (cue Unsolved Mysteries theme music)

The St. Louis Post Dispatch reports there will be no Big 12 investigation

Also, friend in KC points out that the radio voice behind the investigation rumor, Kevin Keitzman, is known to rumor monger.   What a rumor whore (according to the rumor, anyway).

UPDATE 2:

--Kansas AD Lew Perkins speaks, fails to address odd spelling of own first name

-- Mizzou spokesperson Chad Moller speaks about lobbies.

I can't stop smiling at the infantile whine-fest on this this site. Can you get your heads around the fact that you CAN'T lose to the SAME TEAM TWICE in the SAME SEASON and get BCS respect? Repeat after me: Personal responsibility is a sign of maturity and charcter and allows for personal growth. But then again we're talking about Mizzou here. As the adage goes, winning is the best revenge. Orange juice anyone?
MIZZOU-MOUSE, December 7, 2007 01:12 AM
Hey Dubbs...Yes Daniel is going to NY as a Heisman Finalist....But only because they need a fourth butt in a chair. Daniel winning over much more derserving McFadden, Tebow, and Breenen, would be equatable to KU getting the Orange bowl bid over MU. And we know how fair YOU think that was. As a KU grad, I fully admit that MU should have received the bid over KU. But they didn't, Mizzery fan is pissed (little man sydrome) and I love it....OUr AD stepped up, your's didn't. You got blown out in the big 12 championship game, we didn't. We got asked to the prom by Brad Pitt, you got passed over and had to settle on sloppy seconds......bummer
Brett, December 6, 2007 07:12 AM
As a KU grad, I would much rather be where MU is than where we ended up. MU got ridiculous amounts of respect and praise for two solid weeks, not to mention the primetime signature game two weeks in a row. MU was ranked #1 and played to get into the national championship. I would take all of that over the Orange Bowl any day.
Brian, December 6, 2007 04:12 AM
If Mizzou fans have a gripe, it should be toward Illinois getting the Rose Bowl bid with 3 losses (Missouri, Iowa, and Michigan). Iowa and Michigan aren't even ranked!! But to compare Mizzou and KU, Mizzou lost two games to a now top 5 team (the same team twice). KU only lost once and to a top 5 team at the time and now ranked 7th. Head to head comparisons are great so long as you also concede Kentucky being better than LSU, Colorado better than Oklahoma, Stanford better than USC, and Appalachian State being better than Michigan.
Mark Mangino, December 6, 2007 01:12 AM
I wanted to recruit in St. Louis, but got lost on the highway. I asked the guy at the gas station, "What's the fastest way to get to 270?" and some joker said, "Eat more salad!"

THANKS FOR THE INFO

It would be so f'ing awesome if Mangino could get a job coaching at TCU. Then he could wear all purple and look just like Grimace. Charlie Weis would be so jealous.

I like my women with their underwear jammed up their crack on a daily basis too.

The posting function on this website is so crass.
This Guy, December 5, 2007 07:12 AM
One of my favorite sites besides JSF is Cracked.com... the one bad thing about cracked is that no matter how funny an article is, there is always some blow hard know it all that is nay saying something that is written in a humorous fashion. That’s what I see going on here. With most of the common posters on here, we understand the point of this site. Even when I disagree with the boys here (turkey legs are completely acceptable and kick ass), I know that everything written on here is for the fun of the game. We like our JSF like we like our women... funny, smart and able to give a good fat joke when it is needed. If you don’t know what the hell you're talking about (or you know TOO much and try to act like the annoying kid that got his underwear jammed up his crack on a daily basis) keep your mouth shut and let us have our fun. We all love sports and we all love to have a good time... JSF, you guys are one of the things that helped That Guy and myself through this deployment. Keep on keepin on.

Oh.. And I think Mangino ate Charlie Weis.

ABSURDITY!!! Classy effing absurdity has been going on on this site for a looooooong time. Please try to understand that. And then go buy a ticket to a college bowl game, the BCS needs you.

Also, you appear to be a regular reader of the column, yet have never chimed in as anti-fat joke as applied to a certain porcine coach from South Bend among others. Only when your coach was ridiculed did you take your stand. Which makes you a hypocrite. And probably fat.
Kilo, December 5, 2007 05:12 AM
Is it classy to eat yourself to 400 plus pounds? I think not. It is reprehensible and irresponsible, especially for someone who has expert physical trainers/ therapists at their disposal, not to mention a state of the art training complex. Disgusting, and asking for ridicule.
Matt, December 5, 2007 04:12 AM
Kilo, nice generalization, but no I am not fat at all. I am in good shape and take care of myself. I just don't happen to believe in picking on people for their physical condition. It's called class Kilo, look into it.......

Kilo, December 5, 2007 04:12 AM
I'm guessing Matt is overweight, because no-one ever gets that offended about something unless it hits really close to home. If you don't like being made fun of because you're fat, lose some fffing weight. Personal responsibility people.
Patrick, December 5, 2007 03:12 AM
Leave it to one of our common commenters to get it. Jesus. ABSURDITY. This story is absurd - and we CELEBRATE IT.

and for the record, as a tigers fan, i'd rather play arkansas than virginia tech... it'll be a much more fun game and be a clash between the "underrated Big12" and the "end all be all" SEC.
TF, December 5, 2007 03:12 AM
Relax everybody. This column is just doing what the site says it does: celebrating the absurdity of professional sports. We should all be glad that we have this forum.

...and fat jokes are always funny.

We're pretty messed up in the head.
KU Alum from STL, December 4, 2007 06:12 PM
Dubbs, neither school is pristine. Danny Manning had nothing to do with probation; it was Vincent Askew. If you are referring to the hiring of a player's father to gain a recruiting edge, reference Julian Winfield. But this has nothing to do with what's wrong with college football: not only is the BCS incapable of repair, the conferences need to get rid of the championship games. But for the Big XII title game, MU is in the BCS title game. Don't get me wrong, I am a KU fan and I take no delight in Mizzou's success. But there is no doubt that they should have been in a BCS game ahead of KU. Of course, the BCS limit on schools from one conference is a shortsighted approach...
Matt, December 4, 2007 05:12 PM
I am a fan of this site and I do think making fat jokes is stupid, cheap, lazy and wrong. =I mean be orginal. It's easy to take a shot at Mangino for his weight; try writing something original or intelligent to support your arument.
Ugh, December 4, 2007 05:12 PM
I think we need to rename the Cotton Bowl to the Cottonelle Bowl, because it is Wednesday and the MU fans are still crying...get over it already.
Lou, December 4, 2007 05:12 PM
For someone who says he's a fan of this site to get upset at a fat joke is kind of odd.
Do you ever read the Fan columns?

CREEPY DADS RULE!!!
STEVUS, December 4, 2007 05:12 PM
By the way Kansa fans. Mangino must be like 80, cause it would take a normal human about 30 years and a thyroid disorder to weigh that much.
Stevus, December 4, 2007 05:12 PM
As an Ardent Big Ten Fan I think Kansas and all it's fans need to realize that the team played a soft schedule, was beaten by a better team and simply stole a bowl bid from one of the other underserving Big twelve teams. Over the past 7 years Big Twelve teams fare better in the bowl selection for one reason "Texas". If any little twelve team plays a texas school and wins they are automatically bossted two spots in the rankings, and the texas schools have performed poorly (with the exception of 2005) in Bowl participation. I think you all should quit whining because at least you got a bowl game that means something.

P.S. Ohio State is the worst "by default" team to ever make it to a bowl game let alone a national championship.

GO SPARTANS!

By the way, nice fat joke about our coach. Real creative there: gee that's never been done before.

Why is it socially acceptable to make fun of fat people? Real classy there.

As I wrote earlier, typical Mizzou.
Patrick, December 4, 2007 04:12 PM
I'm not sure what part of "i'm not outraged, but I do think it's noteworthy" is so hard to understand. This whole thing is an indictment of college football, not KU.

The whole point is to reinforce what we already knew: college football is dominated by the dollar and politics. I'm not sure how this post gives the vibe that I'm obsessed with hating KU or that I'm a sore loser... the only bowl game that matters is the championship game. Mizzou wan't getting it regardless.
Matt, December 4, 2007 04:12 PM

Chris, December 4, 2007 04:12 PM
get over it you bunch of sore losers. Can't help it that your AD is a moron and doesn't know how to sell his school to a bowl committee. Hell, they still haven't figured out how to get Temple his year of eligibility back because Pinkel decided to yank his red shirt for one f'n game. GEt over it you losers
Matt, December 4, 2007 04:12 PM
I love this website, but this is truly an idiotic column. As a Kansas fan, I think Missouri deserved a BCS Bowl Bid and got screwed. I also think KU deserved one, and should not apologize for going to the Orange Bowl. Did Missouri deserve to go ahead of KU? Yes, they did because they beat KU head to head.

However, you are writing this article as a fact when there is NO evidence to support this right now. The radio host who "broke" this story is a well known KU hater and has been proven wrong on many of his "breaking: news stories about KU, MU, and the Chiefs in the past. He has no evidence to back this up and cannot even cite the rule that Perkins broke.

If I am proven wrong and it turns out there is proof that KU did something unethical then I will be upset about that and lose even more respect for Lew Perkins.

I have felt bad for Mizzou over the last few days because I felt their players and coaches were nor rewarded the way they should have been for a great year. However, after listening ot the obsession of all things KU by Missouri fans is causing me to feel less sypathy for them. Missouri fans spend more time trying to tear down KU than they do enjoying their own teams success......
Matt, December 4, 2007 04:12 PM
You're an idiot. Until there is proof of this, don't write about it as fact. As of now there is no proof. The radio station and host that "broke" this story is a known KU hater and has been proven wrong on many of his breaking news stories in the past about KU, MU, the Chiefs, and other teams.

I am a Kansas fan, and I have felt that Mizzou has a legitimate gripe about being left out of the BCS. But the more and more I read and listen to the pathetic obsession Mizzou fans have towards KU, the less symathy I have.

Typical MU fans; more obsessed with trying to tear down KU than they are with their own team's success.
MR. SEC, December 4, 2007 03:12 PM
KU will be beaten badly in the Orange and MU can not play with a good SEC team. The weak big 12 will be exposed
dmr in boston, December 4, 2007 02:12 PM
Get over it MU fans. This probably has less to do with Perkins and Co. and more to do with Alden's dumb a$$. How is he still employed there??
Dubbs, December 4, 2007 02:12 PM
Rich Daly was 100 yrs ago, why didn't you bring up Larry Brown and Danny & the Miracles "cleanliness" if you want to go back that far, Quin/Ricky never got us a lack of institutional control finding from the NCAA, the Fatman (really men, Perkins hasn't missed to many meals either) earned that for you about a year ago...anywho I'll take the head to head win and a Heisman Finalist(yes he is going to NYC) over buying a bowl game and that little turd "sparky" showtime baby any day, and so would you
Vols Fan, December 4, 2007 02:12 PM
I've seen both ends of the spectrum......I saw a #2 ranked Tennessee team lose the SEC conference championship and therefore a place in the title game (2001) and I nearly saw a completely undeserving Tennessee team earn a trip to a BCS Bowl bid (2007).....

The conference championships are often of more harm than good for the teams involved.....

I think the NCAA should abandon the BCS system, however, I do not think they should adopt a playoff. Let's just go back to regional tie ins, and let the polls determine the champion. this would of course be biased, but obviously so is the current system....and let's me honest, the bias was part of the fun.

Howver, if a playoff system where adopted I believe it should 4 teams. There are simply not 8 teams that deserve the NC based on their regular season schedule.

Bowls aren't a championship. They're an exhibition. The game is about selling tickets, and frankly, this stinks of sour grapes.

There's only one way to fix this, and that's with a playoff of no less than 16 teams. Otherwise, you guys are bitching about a meaningless game -- other than the money. At least KU has the sense to know what it's all about...
KU Alum From STL, December 4, 2007 12:12 PM
I agree that MU should be in a BCS bowl ahead of KU. You shouldn't be penalized for having to play in the joke that is a conference title game -- and that's what happened to MU. But this is just the latest f-up in the BCS short, but storied history of screwing teams (see: Colorado in 2001, USC in 2003). I don't think that guaranteeing to buy tickets is all that wrong -- especially if you sell them all. Hell, that's the reason that Notre Dame (whom I loathe) has a history of getting bowl invites. But I do think it's wrong that this discourse is even happening. There should be a playoff. It works for every other NCAA/NAIA sport. And BTW, Dubbs: MU doesn't exactly have the cleanest track record with the NCAA (Quin Snyder, Ricky Clemons, Rich Daly, etc.).
