NFL Free Agency is just 72 hours old and we've already had 3 (at-one-time) All-Pro tackles move cities via trades.  Per Jay Glazer at FoxSports, the Jaguars have traded Marcus Stroud to Buffalo for for 3rd and 5th round draft picks.  Stroud is probably excited, seeing as Buffalo is a hotbed for steroids (I made that up).

On Friday, the Panthers traded Kris Jenkins to the Jets for 3rd and 5th round selections and Detroit sent Shaun Rogers packing to Cleveland for a 3rd round pick and cornerback Leigh Bodden - apparently Bodden is no better than a 5th round selection.

On the surface, the trades seem to work well for all involved.  Not working well, however, are 4 signings that seem waaay overpriced - at least in this man's opinion.

4.) Jeff Faine - A "quality" center gets $37.5 million over 6 years for agreeing to play in Tampa Bay.  Yes, I realize teams have more cap room again this off-season, but an average of 6 million per seems a bit drastic even in this year's context.

3.) Justin Smith - Reports indicate he signed a 6 year $45 million deal with $20 million guaranteed to play in San Francisco.  Smith had just 2.5 sacks last year, and he'll get $32.5 million over the first 4 years of the deal.  For what it's worth, the 49ers confirmed he will play right defensive end and would slide inside to tackle on passing downs.  To Smith's credit, he's played in 170 straight games and since he's white, he's lauded for "working hard" and playing with a "motor that never stops".  But he ain't worth $45 million.

2.) Asante Samuel - 6 years $57 million, with $20 million guaranteed in signing bonuses.  Don't get me wrong, Samuel is a great cornerback with a knack for making big plays, but like Nate Clements last year, he's the beneficiary of an inflated market.  The deal is even more bizarre in that Philadelphia has Samuel overtaking Lito Sheppard's spot at LCB.

1.) Gibril Wilson - Who else but the Raiders would win the award for most overpaid free agent within the first 40 hours?  I guess that's what it takes to get people to play in Oakland.  Like Dexter Jackson and Larry Brown before him, Wilson is a moderately good defensive back from a Super Bowl winning team.  Henceforth, he's getting paid like a Hall of Famer.  He's now the 3rd highest paid safety in the league, having inked a 6 year $39 million deal, that includes guaranteed bonuses of $16 million.   Congratulations Raiders!

Anyone who belives our economy is in steep decline clearly doesn't work in or follow the NFL.

Mr. Irrelevant, it appears you are new to this site. I said WCC was my first love. If you were unaware, WCC came before me. WCC is what drew me to this site. Now that I have been introduced to . . . well . . . myself, I am now my favorite section on this site. Let's not bicker amongst ourselves when we fight for a common goal.

Me too!

The Eagles did a great job evaluating me.

MEDIASPACE you sound like a bitch. WTF The mediaspace has been and always will be the best thing on this site. The worthless cards are great but they dont compare to a mediaspace. I think you need to go back and look at all the old mediaspaces twice and think about what you have just said. That said I heard that Randy Moss and Dante Culpepper might want to sign together I say bring'em to the Bears they'll kick some ass here.

I have to admit, WCC was my first love. It is what drew me to this site.PS-Ticker, I haven't forgotten about you either.

But as long as I'm thinking about it, doesn't Chris Berman deserve a Mediaspace page?

Mediaspace: I know you are feeling underused and underappreciated, but you must realize that you will always be at best a distant second to Worthless Card Collection. If the guys are short on time, I think that they will be dedicating their energies to WCC before you.

Doesn't it seem like a lot of Patriots are signing with other teams early in this FA period? Samuel, Gay, and Stallworth have all jumped ship, and it looks like Moss isn't far behind. Have these guys all decided they don't want to play for a dickweed like Belichick if he can't cheat and give them an advantage?

Memo to Ozzie Newsome: GET LITO SHEPPARD!
Patrick, March 3, 2008 04:03 AM
If Andy Reid stops talking about cake, does that mean he no longer eats it?

Lito Sheppard is a great cornerback easily among the top 10 in the league when he is healthy. Like McNabb, Lito has always had problems staying healthy. If the Eagles front office does one thing right it is in evaluating a players stock in the future. They were right on with so many players; Trotter (both times), Hugh Douglas, Bobby Taylor, Troy Vincent, Carlos Emmons, Shawn Barber, Jermaine Mayberry, Duece Staley, Corey Simon, and to an extent you can argue Donte' Stallworth. They have only been wrong on Derrick Burgess. With the exception of McNabb and Dawkins the Eagles base resigning their players on 2 major components age, 30 typically being the cutoff age, and ability to stay healthy. I absolutley love what Lito brings to the table and before the addition of Samuel he was the biggest defensive playmaker. Lito is unhappy with his contract situation which was brought up in the Philly media before the start of free agency and when Andy Reid refuses to talk about a player it usually means their time playing for the Eagles is over.
Patrick, March 3, 2008 03:03 AM
The thing that was so bizarre about the signing is the way Andy Reid completely ignored any and all Lito Sheppard references. They already said that Samuel is taking over his LCB spot... if the Eagles get rid of him, I think it'd be a mistake.
TF, March 3, 2008 03:03 AM
Ashok: Is Lito the type of guy who would get pissed about Samuel taking his spot? If so, could Lito get dealt to my Ravens who are desperately in need of a corner to replace the piece of burnt toast that is Samari Rolle?
MEDIASPACE, March 3, 2008 01:03 AM
Good morning guys. Hope you had a good weekend.
Ashok, March 3, 2008 01:03 AM
As an Eagles fan, I must say that I think the Samuel deal is a good one. As you point out, "only" $20 million is guarenteed and the Eagles have always been good at realizing when their players (especially at D-back) have gone past their prime. Lito Sheppard is slipping and the Eagles are trying to compete in one of the best two divisions in the league from last year. We have the Super Bowl champs. We have the team that was the top seed in the conference. The Eagles finished 8-8 and were in last place. I like the move.

Keith Atherton

On May 30, 1988 Atherton was forced to sit out the game and was disciplined by Indians manager Doc Edwards after eating an entire tube of eye black that he found on the dugout floor.
