Memo to the Media: VCU Won

It was a bit of a surprise seeing VCU pull off the only true upset in Day 1 of Round 1. In a bit of not-so-surprising news, the majority of the mainstreamers took the 11-6 upset as the good ole reliable “Duke Loses” story – you know, since Duke lost last night and VCU didn’t have anything to do with it.
Sarcasm aside, whether this here guy likes it or not, Duke losing is a bigger story then VCU winning, at least in the warped minds of the majority of decision makers in the online world. Here’s a sampling of homepage headlines from our online outlet uncles and grandpas around 10:00 pm (CST). Not all were jaded towards the “Duke Loses” theme, but many really sucked either because of suckitude or snappiness gone wrong…
"Out-duked" – Sportsline
"Duke Done Early" – espn
”Duke who? It’s VCU!” – espn (one hour later)
"Coach K-Od" – foxsports
"Feeling Blue" – msnbc
"Silenced by the Rams" – SI
"VCU shuffles past Duke, springs first round surprise" - USA Today
"Blue be-Deviled" - Yahoo Sports
"VCU Later" - TSN
I don’t know who at SI thought rhyming with Silence of the Lambs was a good idea, but I’m guessing they write fantasy columns for their local suburban news magazine. Notice msnbc, FSN, CBS, and Yahoo all took the “Duke Loses” theme in a horribly contrived snapfest. And I have no clue what drugs are being passed around in the Sporting News’ lounge, but the TSN headline gives off the vibe that VCU lost. ESPN rebounded a bit from their original 'Duke Loses' theme to a snappier, way more hip pro-VCU headline.
USA Today wins! No snappiness, just a standard news headline that tells the pro VCU story. Here Here for USA Today!

Oh, and Monday’s
Mike Krzyzewski column generated some minor buzz around these parts (you may have heard about that). Well, it turns out that Coach K wasn’t exactly mentally prepared for VCU, as Thursday afternoon he placed a phone call to JSF HQ to give us his feelings about being smeared in the Monday column.
Take a listen – it’s just a 2 minute conversation. K was very direct and to the point and apparently very distracted heading into the VCU contest.
