As we head into the playoffs in baseball, insane amounts of media attention will be focused on the teams in the playoffs and “how ready they are.”  Who is hot?  Who is stumbling into the playoffs?  Who is going to lose to the American League “in three games?”  No matter who wins and loses the Division Serieses, the media will try to relate the win or loss to the way the team played in September, as if somehow that determines the playoff outcome.

This week’s Top 7 looks at storylines for the baseball playoff teams that really don’t have much merit.

7. “The games really count now”
You will sometimes hear announcers talk about how important games are this time of year.  Well, they count the same in April.  Look at the Brewers of 2007 as an example.  If they hadn’t started out so well at the start of the year, they wouldn’t even have a chance to play these important games in September.

ichiro6. “It hurts to clinch early”
The theory here is that the players aren’t used to playing games that are highly important and can’t “turn it back on.”  This theory sort of worked for the 2001 Mariners, who won 116 (!) games in the regular season but lost in the ALCS, but not so much for the 1998 Yankees, who annihilated everyone in the regular season and the playoffs, losing only two games in the three series.

5. “It sure helps to finish strong”
It seemed to help the 2005 Astros--they were hot for nearly the entire second half of the season, and had to battle the entire last week to get the Wild Card spot.  When they made it to the World Series, it was because they had been playing “meaningful baseball” in late September so they were ready for the playoffs.  Of course, last year’s San Diego Padres went 20-8 in September for their playoff push, but then lost to the Cardinals in four games in the Division Series.  They were too exhausted from playing meaningful baseball I guess.

4. “A-Rod sucks in the playoffs”
This had to be thrown in somewhere.  If he hits .900 in the playoffs this year, reading the crap of those who have ripped him will be highly entertaining.

3. “The Cubs can’t win the World Series because of a goat”
Besides both the Red Sox and White Sox ending their “curses,” there have been other lesser-known examples of “_________ will never happen because of ___________.”  A small but vocal group of Cardinal fans said that they would never win the World Series while Tony LaRussa managed them.  Until they did.  The same will happen with the Cubs sometime, maybe even this year.

2. “You can’t stumble into the playoffs”
The 2000 New York Yankees are a less-cited example of this.  They lost their last seven games and 13 of their last 14, and still won the whole thing.

1. “The National League can’t win”
wainerSince the “near collapse” has already been covered with the Yankees, last year’s Cards are also an example of all of the people who said that the National League had no chance to win the World Series last year.  Sure, some of us Cards fans made sure to shove that in the faces of those who said so quite often, but what is happening again this year?  People are making the exact same predictions.

Yes, the American League probably has the best four teams out of the eight playoff teams.  But that in no way means that they are a lock to win the World Series.

We still love Ozzie. He had 3 winning seasons before this one in which there was a rash of injuries. If they are brutal next year though, my view might change.
Dusty got turned on because he seemed so clueless his last 2 years.

What about the 1983 "Winning Ugly" White Sox?? Rolled into the post-season, then tanked it against the Orioles. Oh, wait, they were managed by LaRussa!!!

Naitch, I meant to make a comment about the White Sox in there...they are also an example of another phenomenon--giving the manager WAY too much credit for a win. Chicago is big on that...they were all over Dusty back in '03, loved Ozzie Guillden in 2005, then they started sucking, and they turned on both. Here's a solution--how about NOT giving the manager so much credit?

What about the 05 white sox who almost blew a 17 game lead to dominate in the post season, only losing 1 game.
I know they have sucked this year, but if the cubs choke, as it appears they are trying their best too......AGAIN, it pretty much makes up for the sox sucking hard this year.

Bernie, I'd feel sorry for the Rocks if they make the playoffs because there is absolutlely no way (other than a small, small chance) they continue playing at the same level. At some point, the well runs dry.

Oh, one more note, It's a nice consolation being a Wisconsinite transplanted to Colorado, holding in my posession two front-row, upper-deck tix to both possible playoff games the Rockies might host next weekend...

...I'm not a huge Rox fan, but they ARE the hottest team in the game right now. On the 'momentum going into the playoffs" subject, if they make it, I'd almost feel sorry for whoever would end up playing them in the first round!

Cubs will NOT win the World Series, at least not this year. Brewers can continue their abhorably horrible play, but if the Cubs keep losing it's still a slave to any wounds incurred. And, the Bears STILL suck!!! Cardinal Nation should realize this, as we are all commrades in the same legion of Cub-hating!

Praise that goat...the goat f%#kin' ROCKS!

The Wainwright picture is indeed still awesome. And I for one eagerly look forward to a lion running on to the field to trample mr. Drew.
Kilo, September 28, 2007 03:09 AM
It's in your best interests not to count on JD Drew for anything. If he starts heating up, that typically means an injury of the "he's really sitting out because of that" variety should pop up shortly.
DFA, September 28, 2007 02:09 AM
Kilo, I'd fully prepare for the possibility of JD having a multi-home run game and while rounding the bases after his second dinger, he trips on third base and breaks both ankles. That or a lion comes running in from the outfield and devours his right leg.
The Truth, September 28, 2007 02:09 AM
That is a might nice goat!
Kilo, September 28, 2007 02:09 AM
Here's an underrated storyline. JD Drew is heating up for the last few weeks of the season, even delivering hits/walks in clutch situations for RBIs. As people who have been through this before, how should I, as a Sox fan, prepare myself? Should I just ride the good vibes as long as possible, or fear the worst (striking out looking with runners on late game). I've been trying to convince myself and my boys that he's finally coming around, but, well, you know.
Jason, September 28, 2007 12:09 AM
I agree, it's nice to not have to worry about anything that you have no control over for an entire month.

I too look forward to a non-stressful October for once. My liver does as well.

(That Wainwright picture still gives me a boner.)

Ever since the day he first saw the card, Terry Kennedy regretted wearing extra bronzer the day he posed for that Diamond Kings painting.
