The Jeremy Lin phenomenon is virtually impossible to ignore right now for a sports fan. The puntastic last name, the fact that he plays in the most self-absorbed sports market in the nation, its inescapable. But, if you think about it, it’s not all together unusual to see a completely random name stroll into town and put on a show that makes that city’s fans swoon. We’ve even seen a few come through this town as well – for now we’ll call them the Jeremy Lin All-Stars…

For the past ten seasons in St. Louis, Matthew Leach has been running the Cardinals beat. Ten seasons. Or, 1620 games. Last week, Matthew officially began a new assignment/promotion with MLB.com and handed over the reigns to Jenifer Langosch.

David Freese’s helmet. Autographed balls from the 1982 team. Adam Wainwright’s locker room nameplate. The Cardinals are auctioning off a lot of good stuff this month via their team-run version of eBay. And of all the items for sale this time around, what is checking in as the most coveted?

New St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny is a dashing buck. Striking, actually. Thus, we weren't surprised to come across his very own set of Valentine's Day cards. Pass them along to that special someone in St. Louis on February 14th. Man, woman, whatever. They'll appreciate it. Trust us.

You learn a lot about someone in the face of adversity, even when it's self-inflicted. McLaughlin was faced with disappearing into oblivion or remaking himself and his career. It took two mistakes for McLaughlin to travel down the correct path, which is certainly objectionable. But he finally chose the latter. That's good news for Cardinals fans.

In the sports world, if an athlete’s name is to be permanently associated with a cheesy pun, it needs constant media stroking to mature. As we get closer and closer to the 2012 MLB season, these marketing and publication assets will quickly make the non-Cardinals Albert Pujols a harsher reality. Thursday was one of those days, when photos of Albert Pujols-themed billboards in Los Angeles began to circulate via Twitter.

Albert Pujols wants his name back, damn it. Undoubtedly so he can slap it on some godforsaken Bennigan’s in Orange County.  This was the focus of many a national media headline this week, as the Pujols 5 Westport Grill – is no more. For weeks now, the Cardinals have been pushing the ability to bid on the delivery of Valentine's Day flowers from Fredbird. Other teams in town have taken note. More specifically, the St. Louis Rams.

Mascots are terrible. They're perpetually distracting, typically pantless and way too animated. They're glorified hobos. But we understand that Fredbird is a part of the fabric of this franchise and children love him. Fine, Fredbird can stay. And for the magical month of October 2011, we stomached the Rally Squirrel. But now he's an actual mascot? And gay?
