Another Year, Another “Most Disliked” Award for McGwire
For the second year in a row, Forbes.com released their list of the 10 Most Disliked People in Sports and St. Louisans could proudly say that one of our own made the cut. Like last year, Mark McGwire, the current Cardinals hitting coach made the list by checking in at #8, albeit with a slightly better approval rating. 48% of the people who were polled hated him in 2010 and in 2011 only 43% of the people polled hated him.
Apparently those 5% who changed their minds were swayed when they saw what Jon Jay did at the plate under Big Mac’s tutelage.
Even more notable than McGwire’s appearance might be his peers on the list. With relevant names such as Al Davis, Jerry Jones and Bobby Knight making the Top 10, one must be curious whether OJ Simpson and Ty Cobb were honorable mention. Frankly, I would have guessed that Brett Favre would have made the cut after his habits of milking the media for retirement stories and sending pictures of his dong to co-workers changed most modern sports fans’ opinion of him. Apparently he remains loved.
Let’s hope one of McGwire’s goals for 2012 will be to take a massive leap and get only 35% of the people polled to claim they hate him.
We’re pulling for you Big Mac.
